Born from the womb of the Mother City,
comes a band like no other, a band that defies parameters and exists on
the sharp side of ‘rude, rock, reggae’. Formed in the summer of 2000,
7th Son quickly grew into an arsenal of acoustics and expanded their
backline with the incorporation of some of South Africa's tightest
musicians into the mix. 7th Son gained fast popularity, and it wasn't
long after the release of their first entirely self-produced album,
"Fire in the Rain" that the band began touring the rest of the country
regularly, playing at all major clubs and festivals.
“Ontology”
is 7th Son’s 3rd release and represents a more urgent, rockier sound
than previous releases. The first single taken from “Ontology” is a
cover of the Australian Crawl song “The Boys Light Up” which has been accepted on to several SA radio stations. Future releases from “Ontology” will be “On My Holiday” and “Tokyo” both upbeat surf rock tunes.
To
date, the band has been seen or heard on/in: MTV Australia, MTV Canada,
5fm, SABC, MNET Super Sport, East coast radio, ETV, FHM, SL magazine,
Blunt magazine, Salt Water girl, BPM, LMG, RSG, Good Hope fm, Tuks fm,
UCT radio, MFM, Bush Radio, KFM, Levi’s Magazine, Stage magazine,
Zig-Zag, as well as publications in local newspapers around the
country. They have independently released and sold over 4000 cds
nationwide, have recorded a music video which is currently being aired
on channel MK89, and remain one of the most sort after South African
bands on the internet. Over the last few years 7th Son has acquired
various sponsors, which currently include Malibu, Von Zipper sunglasses
and Metal Machine. 7th Son has developed an extensive fan base,
reaching all parts of the world, and through the use of their website,
e-mail listings, "MySpace", "Facebook", "Twitter", etc.

Ontology 4-star review on Thunda.com
2009-10-10
Rating :
Having formed in 2000, Cape Town’s 7th Son have done their time and
played just about every venue and every festival in SA. The result is a
tight unit, that has become known for an explosive and sweaty live
performance. Being able to transform and project the onstage
electricity into their second studio recording was never going to be
easy.
Luckily, all 6 members of the band are highly talented musicians, and Ontology does the live performance justice, and should help them towards the success they deserve.
Lead guitarist Jedd Kossew is an absolute ripper, and anyone who has
seen the band live would agree to this, with a good few solos always
being thrown into the sets. Thankfully, he hasn’t been held back in
including a few guitar solos on the studio recordings too, but then
again, none of the members have been restrained. Each have been given
the chance to show off their musical capabilities, with brass from
Myles McDonald and Raiven Hansmann, and fat bass lines courtesy of
Miggs Auer.
Ontology, being the science or study of being or existence,
is, according to vocalist Nic Gaud, an apt title that relates to the
album, as the lyrics are basically a story board of things and events
that have happened to him over the last year or so.
The album opens at a fast pace with “Step Outside”, and the first 4
tracks glide between sounds of punk reggae rock, ska trumpets, funky
bass lines, and foot tapping drum beats. Within that first 4 is the
last minute inclusion to the album “Boys Light Up”, a cover of the 80’s
hit by Aussie group Australian Crawl, and is proving to be popular on
SA download sites, with the track receiving an updated and upbeat sound.
The band also show off some of their funk influence with Nic ending
off “Tokyo” singing Fatboy Slim’s “Right about now, the funk soul
brother”.
Things slow down a touch with “Spending Time”, where Raiven Haansman
is able to belt out a massive sax solo, but they pick up again towards
the end with “Bleed Me Out”, and “Sleight of Hand”, and into the ska
sounding “Dry Life”.
But for me, the real gem on the album is the closer “Lately”. It
takes the band into an acoustic area they haven’t really delved into
before, and just highlights their versatility, with its smokey blues
bar feel. Very impressive.
A highly recommended album, and a must see live show. Rude Rock Reggae!
